Pros n Cons of the Internet

There are many pros and cons pertaining to the internet.  The ease of accessing information, instant messaging, and banking are the basic necessities of business today. The cons of the internet are that there are sex offenders; illegal downloads of music, pornography of children, viruses, scams.

One of the advantages of the internet is that it gives us students a change to learn more from a subject and expand our horizons. If they took that aspect away from us and blocked cites then the internet wouldn’t be as real as it is. We rely so much on the internet too, such as checking out bank accounts and paying bills online. Since the internet went commercial, with the help of Al Gore, the internet has now made businesses more secure and able to do business from remote locations. Inventories by the use of the internet can now make goods available and reorder as soon as they are bought in the store. We use the internet for chat purposes and people have met and dated from the internet. We all use the internet to get news and to problem solve in business, which speeds up production and how could we live with out the internet.

There are sex offenders that target young children and try to meet teens under the age of eighteen. There is a TV show out that shows the offenders trying to enter the houses of a teen under age and messages are retrieved from the internet site for documentation of evidence. The reporter tells the criminal that is on TV and is under arrest. These types of offenses should be monitored more closely to prevent these types of things happening and parents should have more control over what their child watch and learn on the internet and not allow teenagers to chat for hours online without the parent knowing about the internet usage. There could be better programs built to respond to the parent and tell exactly what surfing was done and the websites they have looked at to discipline the child.

The music companies spend millions of dollars to make music for us to buy in the store and internet users use limewire to illegally download illegal copies of artist music that cost millions of dollars to make. Lawsuits have been filed and people have had to pay thousands of dollars to pay back the artists for their illegal acts.

There are over seas people that have committed crimes and made viruses to purposely hurt the business world. Banks have been robbed and people’s bank accounts have been taped into for hackers have transferred the accounts using the internet. Now, there is VPN’s set up that encrypt the information being sent across the wire. VPN’s are called Virtual Private Networks and the encryption starts at the receiving end and encrypts the information before being sent. When the information is received at the other end the encryption is done again so the receiver knows the information is who it actually is. Information is more secure today than it was several years ago and several measures have been put in place to secure a network for internet use. Dumb terminals are set up to test the outside contact and who is trying to access the internet and the type of actual activity that is taking place.

These Pros and Cons of the internet are all the aspects that the internet acquired when the internet went public. A lot has been done to secure networks and stop the Cons that jeopardize the internet being regulated. Having the government regulate the internet would change the way us users access the internet and access information to learn from.
